A boisterous, wide-awake group of 24 seniors turned out for breakfast this beautiful morning at Elmwood Golf Course Club Room.
Since it was World Day of Prayer, Mary Lou (Butler) Litton opened our get together with grace and a prayer for those deceased members of our class. Particularly mentioned were those who have passed away since our February Newsletter – Carl Piatek, Alfred Mixon and Patricia (Wolter) Redlon.
Jim Pagano gave a brief history of the Sicilian-style painted cart (“carretto”) that was produced by the local Sons of Italy and will be participating in several local and out of town parades. The artwork on the Cart depicts the story of the Italian Immigrants that came to the United States and eventually settled in Pueblo. Art scenes on the Cart include Christopher Columbus & his three ships, Ellis Island & the Statue of Liberty, a country Church, Avondale, Blende & Vineland farm areas & the CF&I Steel Mills and Mines.
A newspaper article from a recent edition of the Pueblo Chieftain was passed around as it was depicting a day in the life of Jack Chick’s oldest grandson who is a Lieutenant in the US Navy currently stationed in Afghanistan. His position is the American Liaison Officer to the Minister of Health in Afghanistan and his responsibility is to assist in setting up a complete health system for that country. Our constant prayers are for his safe return to the United States in June when his tour of duty is over.
May birthdays recognized were those of Betty Pigg, Jack Chick and Betty Sue (Fleming) Tafoya and they were serenaded with an off key (way off key) rendition of Happy Birthday.
Ideas for our 60th Reunion activities were discussed and it was decided to include a survey in our next Newsletter (July, 2009) asking classmates for their input and wishes.
Alma (Johnson) Baynes announced that her latest endeavor (after retiring from teaching at PCC) is working as an “Address Canvaser” for the Census Bureau. This is updating names & addresses in the City and County as a preliminary step in preparing for the 2010 Census. She asked everyone to be aware this is going on but to be sure and ask for proper identification from the canvasser before answering questions or inviting them into your home.
During our “Brag & Lie” session it was noted that Mary Lou (Butler) Litton, Hez Salsbury and Nola Jackson all had granddaughters graduating successfully from various Universities and moving on in their young lives.
A group picture was taken after breakfast of all of your OLD friends. Jack will soon have a link to this photo on our Web site if you are interested in seeing it. The photo was taken by Cathy (Ames) Farmer who is the daughter of our classmate, Catherine (Knuth) Ames.
Our next GET TOGETHER will be Thursday, Sept. 17, 2009. Same place, Elmwood Golf Club House and same time 8a.m. All class members and friends are welcome – no reservations required – just show up and have fun!
